Soulja - ‘Amandla
In his glowing review of Soulja’s album, ’21 Gunslut’, in ‘This Day’, SA music journalist Craig Canavan described ‘Amandla’ as follows: “Take a song like ‘Amandla’, a crazy conglomeration of spoken word, rap and frantic crooning (in Xhosa and English), laid down against a reggae and funk-rock hybrid that will get the most reticent of souls bouncing around like a demented pogo stick.”. He’s spot on (as usual), so give it a listen!

Baobab - ‘Fidelity
This 6-person group, assembled by singer-songwriter Ed Lewis, has been finishing off its debut album, ‘Code 14’, over the past few months. But Baobab gave us something to listen to, to tide us over until that album arrives, and we are grateful for that. The song is called ‘Fidelity’ and it has a naggingly infectious guitar riff, contrasting with some whiny male vocals singing “All I’m saying, is please be gentle, I am frail, but I’m not fragile”. Think elements of Blur, Violent Femmes and The Pixies (all acknowledged as strong influences by the group) and you’ll know why we’re very interested in that upcoming album by Baobab.

Some wry lyrics over a loose punky rock sound, that’s ‘Bad Habits’, the impressive first track off the demo debut received from this Cape Town 5-piece. Read all about The Chalks in the CD section below.

Jo Day - ‘No Warning
There are many SA rock fans who just can’t enough of Jo Day, so we have something new for you called ‘No Warning’... okay? That should keep you satisfied for a while...

Syd Kitchen - 'Perfect Condition'
A contender for the new unofficial SA national anthem, this perky little slice of folkie optimism, off Syd's "best of" CD, called 'Quintessentially' (and originally off his ‘Waiting For The Heave’ album), will have you feeling good in no time... "Don't be sad there's a lot of us out there, we're the army of winners and losers, don't be sad, you know it's not so bad!". ......If you can't stand the heat get into the Kitchen!!
